Ghost bridge

Walking near Blackfriars you see what is can only be described as a ghost bridge.
Its superstructure consists of a series of bridge pier supports that are right alongside Blackfriars Bridge.
The rest of the structure has been removed.
This ghost bridge used to serve the London, Chatham and Dover Railway.
The London, Chatham and Dover bridge over the Thames was removed in the 1980s.
The line had been rarely used in the 20th century and became goods only.
Eventually it was decided it was too weak to support modern rolling stock.
The company's  wonderful insignia is still preserved at one end of what is left of the structure.
But hang on!
Things are happening!
Workmen are crawling all around the old structure.
For the past year major reconstruction work has been under-way at Blackfriars Station as part of the Thameslink 2000 programme and the piers of the old bridge are to be used to extend the station across the Thames,
So the ghost bridge is not returning .........................
