Southampton has a stunning 1930s civic centre which is a Grade II listed building.
It manages to combine a whole host of buildings on to one site
It hosts a police station, council offices, the Guildhall, an art galley and the city library.
The site is currently being improve with a large new square being created.
This has opened up the view you get of the Guildhall.
The Guildhall was opened in 1937 and was initially intended as a social location for municipal functions. Now-a-days it has considerable use as an entertainment venue with diverse events including concerts ranging from folk to rock and to classical.
The clock tower was not part of the original design and was added later.
It can be seen from all over the city and kind of dominates the skyline.
Before construction the designers tied a balloon on the site at the site at the proposed height to make sure it was visible from all points of the city.
