Wilderness station

South African railways can be amazing.
The efforts of the railway engineers to link various places together were amazing.
Over the last few days we have seen railway tracks clinging to cliff faces and tracks going up unimaginable gradients.
It is sad then to see the deserted railway tracks between George and Knysna.
Today I was at an amazing place called Wilderness on the Garden Route,
So here are two photos.
A station platform left and tracks overgrown..........
But at the other end of the platform someone was creating a new resource a resturant on the old platform.

  1. Strange to see that. I took the train from George to Knysna in the early 80s. It was very slow - much slower than driving, and steam powered. Great fun. The track was very twisty, so much so that the (white) driver could see us in the rear (whites only) carriage and wave at us. I think almost no one used the service, even then, so am not totally surprised to see the track is disused. Sad, all the same.
