It only takes some heavy rain and the canal suddenly stops being slow and silent.
The almost still water flows much faster.
It is all because for the last few miles of the Grand Union Canal between Hanwell and Brentford the powerful River Brent rushes into and out of the Grand Union
This frequently results in the canal becoming full of 'rubbish' such as logs and branches.
Good of British Waterway to clear the locks as 'all this stuff' gets behind lock gates and causes all sorts of problems to boaters.
